Can we know which god is the right God? In this series, we have seen that the same primary arguments for the existence of God also prove who that God is. Through the cosmological and fine-tuning arguments, we can see that the God of this universe must be an all-powerful, singular, personal God, who made the universe perfectly to support human life. The only God that fits this description is the God of the Bible.
In this article we will look at the third argument for the existence of God. It, too, points us to no other God than Yahweh. The moral argument says that every law has a lawgiver. Moral law exists; therefore, a moral lawgiver exists.
There is a moral law that governs all people in every part of the world. It is objective. This means that what is wrong is wrong no matter where or when you are living. For example, murder is always wrong. It is wrong in modern America, and it was wrong when the Aztecs practiced human sacrifice. Culture does not define what is moral or immoral.
If morality was not objective it would spell disaster for the world. Without an objective law, we would have no grounds to punish the wicked. Morality would simply exist according to our own personal preferences. If that were the case, there would be no justification to condemn even the most heinous of acts like the Holocaust. But, if morality is objective and grounded on something outside of ourselves, then we have justification to condemn all immorality.
The Bible tells us that morality is objective and grounded in the eternal nature of God. Throughout the scriptures we see that God’s moral law is not something He created on a whim. The Bible shows that God’s law is what it is because God is the definition of goodness! “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!” (Psa. 107:1). “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” (1 John 4:8). Goodness and love do not exist if not for God. Therefore, we know what morality is because God has revealed Himself.
The God of the Bible revealed His goodness to us like no other pagan deity. We can know without a doubt that the one who wrote the moral law is Yahweh because of the person and work of His Son, Jesus Christ. 1 John 3:16 tells us, “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” Not only was Jesus a perfect moral teacher, He was also a perfect moral example.
Which God is the right God? He is the God who showed us how to love by laying down His life for us. Our God is the Lord Jesus Christ.
