How to Study the Bible for the First Time: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you’re new to studying the Bible, welcome! Whether you’re just beginning to explore faith or have always wanted to understand the Bible better, you’re in the right place. We know the Bible can seem intimidating at first—it’s a big book with a lot of history, wisdom, and meaning. But you’re not alone. At Palm Beach Lakes Church of Christ, we’re here to walk with you and help you start with a clear, step-by-step plan. This guide will help you start your first beginner Bible study with confidence and purpose.
1. Choose a Bible Translation
The first step to study the Bible is choosing a translation you can understand and trust. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, so all modern Bibles are translations. Some aim for a word-for-word translation (more accurate to the original languages), while others are thought-for-thought (easier to read).
For a beginner Bible study, we recommend word-for-word or balance-style translations like:
- ESV (English Standard Version)
- NASB (New American Standard Bible)
- NKJV (New King James Version)
You can access any of these translations for free on apps like YouVersion, the Bible app, or websites like BibleGateway.com.
2. Select a Place to Start
One of the most common questions first-time Bible readers ask is, “Where should I start?” Here are a few great options:
- Genesis – start here to see how everything began, and how God’s relationship with humanity was formed.
- One of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John) – start here to learn about Jesus’ life, teachings, and sacrifice.
- Psalms – start here to explore the human experience in relationship to God with a collection of heartfelt prayers and reflections on life and faith.
You can choose to simply start reading on your own, or use a guided study. At Palm Beach Lakes Church of Christ, we offer free study guides to help you explore Scripture with structure and clarity. If you’d like help choosing one, just reach out!
3. Set a Regular Study Time and Place
Consistency matters. Like any new habit, the more consistent you are in execution, the more natural it becomes. You can begin with as little as 10–15 minutes a day. Choose a quiet time and place where you can reflect and focus. Whether it’s early morning, during a lunch break, or before bed, setting a routine will help you stay on track as you study the Bible.
4. Take Notes or Keep a Bible Journal
Writing down your thoughts can deepen your understanding. Use a notebook or journal to jot down:
- Questions that come to mind
- A verse or phrase that stood out
- A simple reflection like: “What is God teaching me in this passage?”
Over time, your notes will help you see patterns, growth, and insights. And when questions arise, you’ll have a record to discuss with someone you trust. Or, you may find that your questions are answered over time as you continue to study.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions and Seek Help
You’re not expected to understand everything right away. In fact, asking questions is one of the best ways to learn. Many people in our church community are happy to walk alongside you, listen, and provide biblical answers.
