A Betrayer, a Denier and a Savior at the Same Table

Judas Was Going to Betray Jesus
1. Jesus was troubled (John 13:21; Luke 22:21)
2. Satan was busy (John 13:2, 27)
3. Judas was complicit (John 13:30)
Peter Was Going to Deny Jesus
1. Jesus was prayerful (Luke 22:32)
2. Satan was persistent (Luke 22:31)
3. Peter was overconfident (Luke 22:33; Matt. 26:33)
Jesus Was Going to Die for All
1. Jesus was going to give His body – “My body” (Matt. 26:26; 1 Cor. 11:24)
2. Jesus was going to give His blood – “My blood” (Matt. 26:28)
  1. His blood would be “shed” = a violent death
  2. His blood would mediate “the new covenant” = an anticipated fulfillment
  3. His blood would wash away sins = a desperately-needed purpose
3. Satan was going to be defeated (Gen. 3:15; Heb. 2:14; Col. 2:15)
The Table That Night Is the Same Table Today
1. On that night, there was at that table:
  1. Self-centeredness = Judas
  2. Self-confidence = Peter
  3. Self-sacrifice = Jesus
2. Today (“as often as” there are Sundays), there is at this table:
  1. The sinners redeemed by the blood of Jesus (Acts 2:38+2:41-42+20:7)
  2. The Savior sharing this remembrance with His people in His kingdom (Matt. 26:29)
  3. The sacred remembrance of sacrificial love
    1. I remember HIS love for ME (Luke 22:19; 1 Cor. 11:25; Gal. 2:20)
    2. I proclaim HIS death for ME (1 Cor. 11:26)
