Let's Go Back to the Bible

“Ah, Lord, I cannot”

Did your parents ever tell you to do something and you responded with, “Oh, but I can’t”? Maybe it was a teacher or a boss. Or maybe you told your kids to do something and they said, “Oh, but I can’t.” Is that an acceptable response? What about when God tells us something?

The Lord came to Jeremiah to commission him as one of His prophets, and he responded to the Almighty, Infinite God by saying, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth” (Jer. 1:5-6). Question: Was that an acceptable way to respond to the commission of God?

How often does the Lord tell us to do something and we make “I cannot” excuses (Luke 9:57-62)? You see, Jeremiah didn’t have any reason to not conform himself to the Lord’s will, and neither do we! Read the Lord’s response to Jeremiah and recognize that He says the same to us today, “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ For you shall go to all to whom I send you, and whatever I command you, you shall speak” (1:7). Let’s “go” to “all to whom” the Lord has sent us!
