A very elderly man was trying to buy alcohol at a gas station. The clerk asked for his ID. The man gasped in frustration, “Do you want to know my blood type, too!” The patient clerk pointed over to a man standing behind the counter—“That’s my manager standing right there. He won’t let me sell it without ID.” The manager quickly chimed in, “Don’t point at me. That’s the rule that you have to follow just as much as I do—it’s from corporate.”
I’ve thought about that scene since witnessing it. The clerk suggested the rule was to be enforced because of the manager, but the manager knew that it was not his rule and had to be obeyed by everyone equally.
Sometimes in the church, do we point at the elders or the preacher, as if certain things have to be done in the church because they teach them or because they are watching? But if elders and preachers are only telling what the Bible says, then don’t point at them, as if they are the standard. Point to God—trust Him and obey Him.
