Let's Go Back to the Bible

How to Read the Bible When It’s Confusing

For many people, opening the Bible can feel both inspiring and intimidating. Scripture is rich, ancient, and deeply meaningful, but it can also feel confusing at times. Questions arise about unfamiliar customs, difficult passages, or how different books fit together. If you have ever struggled to read the Bible and wondered where to begin or how to understand it more clearly, you are not alone.

At the Palm Beach Lakes church of Christ, we believe that God intended His Word to be understood, treasured, and lived. While the Bible requires thoughtful study, it was written so ordinary people could come to know God and ultimately learn about Jesus, the center of Scripture. With patience, humility, and good study practices, confusion can become clarity and uncertainty can turn into faith-building insight.

Begin with Prayer and Humility

Scripture encourages us to seek God’s help when reading His Word. Understanding the Bible is not merely an academic exercise, it is a spiritual one.

Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”Psalm 119:18

Prayer prepares the heart to read the Bible with humility, reminding us that God is the ultimate teacher. Asking God for wisdom aligns with His promise: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach” (James 1:5).

Approaching Scripture prayerfully helps us remain patient when a passage feels difficult and receptive when God challenges our understanding.

Understand the Big Picture of the Bible

One reason the Bible feels confusing is because it is not a single book, but a library of writings containing history, poetry, prophecy, letters, and teaching, written across centuries. Reading individual verses without understanding the context of the larger story can lead to misunderstanding.

Jesus explained that all Scripture ultimately points to Him: “These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39). Seeing the Bible as one unified story helps us learn about Jesus more clearly. The Old Testament prepares the way for Him, and the New Testament reveals His life, teachings, death, and resurrection. When reading a passage, it helps to ask:

  • Where does this fit in God’s overall plan?
  • What does this reveal about God’s character?
  • How does this point toward Christ?

Start with Clear and Foundational Books

Some parts of the Bible are more challenging than others, especially for new readers. It can be helpful to begin with books that clearly present the message of Christ.

  • The Gospel of John: to learn who Jesus is and why He came
  • The Gospel of Luke: for an orderly account of Jesus’ life and teachings
  • Acts: to see how the early church followed Christ

These books help readers learn about Jesus while building confidence to explore more complex passages later.

An Encouraging Reminder

God desires to be known. He is not trying to hide His truth from sincere seekers.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”Psalm 119:105

If the Bible feels confusing, take heart. With prayer, patience, and guidance, understanding grows. As you continue to read the Bible, you will increasingly learn about Jesus, His love, and His call for your life.
