Most Bible translations have a superscription at the beginning of Psalm 102 that reads something like this: “A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed and pours out his complaint before the Lord.” The psalmist truly does pour his complaint to the Lord in this psalm, but I want you to see His confidence, His trust, His solid faith in the midst of his trials. Three times in this psalm, you will read the words, “But You.” The contrast is vivid—in the face of ongoing turmoil, there is GOD!
Look in verse 11: “My days are like a shadow that lengthens, and I wither away like grass.” The writer’s days were nearing an end,
“But You, O LORD, shall endure forever” (102:12).
At the end of the psalm, there is recognition that the earth “will perish, but You will endure” (102:26). The earth and heavens “will all grow old like a garment…and they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will have no end” (102:26-27).
Things may look bad around us. The end may come before we are ready. Where is our faith? Is it firmly in “But You!”?
