Let's Go Back to the Bible

Which God Is the Right God? (Part 2)

Last week, we looked at how we can know that the God of the Bible is the true God of the universe. We saw through the cosmological argument that God must be all-powerful, and He must be one. Therefore, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob must be the God of our universe. But, the proof evidence doesn’t stop there.

The second great apologetic for the existence of God is called the Teleological or Fine-Tuning Argument. Simply put, the argument states that the laws and physical constants that govern our universe are so precise that random chance cannot rationally explain their existence. As Kyle Butt, D. Min. of Apologetics Press put in it in his aptly named article, “Design Demands a Designer.”

The universe is immensely complex, and all of its intricacies must be perfectly complementary in order for life to exist. The sun must be precisely at the right distance and size to not burn the earth but provide enough energy to sustain life. The moon must be the right size, distance, and have the right orbit so that we have tides that stir the waters of the earth but do not flood the landmasses. These two examples do not even begin to touch on the impossible amount of conditions that must be right to allow for life on earth.

But, the fine-tuning doesn’t stop there. When we examine life on earth, the rabbit hole just gets bigger. If we look at the human body, there is an entire universe of complexity that must all exist at the same time in order for the body to operate and reproduce. Consider how intricate and powerful just the brain is. In the same article, Dr. Butt says, “The brain is composed of over 10 trillion different cells. These cells work together to send electrical impulses at a rate of 273 miles per hour (393 feet per second). Nerve cells in the body send 2,000 impulses to the brain every second. These impulses come from 130,000 light receptors in the eye, 100,000 hearing receptors in the ears, 3,000 taste buds, and over 500,000 touch spots.” The universe could not have happened by accident. The only explanation is that God designed the universe perfectly for you and me.

Unlike any false god of human religions, the God of the Bible demonstrates His mastery of the entirety of universal complexity. In Genesis chapter 1, we see how He speaks all of these components into existence. As He willed, each piece of the puzzle was spoken into its place in perfect harmony with the whole of creation. And when He finished, “…God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good” (Gen. 1:31). No pagan god measures up to the might of the God of the Bible. Yahweh, the Most High, must be the God of this universe.
