Audio

  1. Jesus Emphasized Where His Friends DWELL
    1. Jesus’ friends dwell in Him (15:4-7)
      1. We must be baptized into Christ (Gal. 3:27) and “abide in Him” to be His Friend
    2. Jesus’ friends dwell in His Word (15:7)
      1. We must ensure that His words abide in us (15:7)
      2. His words involve His “commandments” (15:10-17)
    3. Jesus’ friends dwell in His love (15:9-10)
      1. There is no greater love than Jesus’ love (15:13)
      2. To remain a recipient of His love is conditional (15:10)
    4. Jesus’ friends must maintain a continual connection to Him (15:1-10)
      1. One can be “in” Him but be taken “away” from Him (15:2) and “cast out” (15:6)
  2. Jesus Emphasized What His Friends DO
    1. Jesus’ friends can do nothing without Him (15:4-5)
    2. Jesus’ friends bear “much” and “more” fruit (15:1-8)
      1. Fruit in personal growth (Gal. 5:22-23)
      2. Fruit in doing right (Phil. 1:11)
      3. Fruit in serving others (Gal. 6:7-10)
      4. Fruit in worship (Heb. 13:15)
      5. Fruit in teaching the lost (1 Cor. 3:5-15)
      6. This is Jesus’ expectations for “every” and “any” friend (15:2, 6)
    3. Jesus’ friends keep His commandments (15:10, 14; cf. Matt. 28:20)
    4. Jesus’ friends love one another (15:12, 17; cf. 13:34-35)
  3. Jesus Emphasized What Brings His Friends DELIGHT
    1. Jesus’ friends have the delight of:
      1. Abiding in Christ and having Christ abide in them (15:4-5)
      2. Answered prayer (15:7, 16)
      3. Glorifying the Father by their actions (15:8)
      4. Showing themselves to be His disciples (15:8)
      5. Being loved by Christ (15:9)
      6. Knowing His sacrificial love (15:13)
      7. Experiencing a full joy from Christ (15:11)
    2. These delights are enjoyed conditionally (“if”—15:7, 10, 14)
  4. Jesus Emphasized That Being His Friend Has a DOWNSIDE
    1. The world will hate Jesus’ friends (15:18)
    2. The world will persecute Jesus’ friends (15:20)
    3. Jesus explained the reasons:
      1. Because you are like Jesus (15:18)
      2. Because you are not “of the world” (15:19; cf. 2 Cor. 6:17; 1 Pet. 2:9)
      3. Because you are submitted to Christ (15:21; cf. Acts 4:1-12; 5:41)
      4. Sometimes for no rightful cause at all (15:25)
      5. Because the world is under the rule of Satan (14:30; 16:11; 1 John 5:19)
  5. Are You a Friend of Jesus?
    1. Believe Jesus is the Son of God – John 3:16
    2. Repent of your sins and turn toward God – Acts 17:30
    3. Confess your faith in Jesus Christ – Romans 10:9

      2. God will add you to His church – Acts 2:47
