  1. Mary the Servant – She ATTENDED to Jesus
    • Mary was often found at the feet of Jesus (Luke 10:39; John 11:32; 12:3)
    • Mary honored Jesus with more than ordinary hospitality (Psa. 23:5; Luke 7:46)
    • Mary showed deep respect, humility and love for Jesus (John 12:3)
    • Mary gave lavishly to Jesus, holding nothing back (John 12:3, 5; Mark 14:3)
  2. Judas the Thief – He CONTENDED with Jesus
    • Judas was a greedy thief only interested in money and self (12:4-6)
    • Judas feigned concern for others to justify his criticism (John 12:5)
    • Judas had negatively influenced the other disciples (Matt. 26:8-9)
    • Judas “criticized her sharply” (Mark 14:5)
    • Judas viewed sacrificing for Jesus as a “waste” (Matt. 26:8)
    • Judas conspired to betray Jesus after this event (Matt. 26:14-16)
  3. Jesus the Friend – He DEFENDED Mary
    • He REPRIMANDED Judas (and the disciples)
      1. Jesus told them to “let her alone” (John 12:7; Mark 14:6; Matt. 26:10)
      2. Jesus knew that Judas was not concerned about the poor (Matt. 26:10a)
      3. Jesus told Judas he could serve the poor “whenever you wish” (Mark 14:7)
    • He COMMENDED Mary
      1. “She has done a good work for me” (Matt. 26:10)
      2. “She has done what she could” (Mark 14:8)
    • He EXTENDED Mary’s Influence
      1. Mary’s good work would be “told as a memorial to her” (Mark 14:9)
      2. Mary’s good work would be shared with “the whole world” (Matt. 26:13)
  4. Have We Done What We Could for Jesus?
      • Jesus SUMMARIZED much of the Christian religion in one statement
        1. “She hath done” – God expects us to be active in doing good works (Matt. 7:21-27; Jas. 1:21-27; 2:14-26; John 13:17)
        2. “What she could” – God holds us responsible for what we are able to do (Matt. 25:14-30; 2 Cor. 8:3, 12; Rom. 12:6-8; 1 Pet. 4:10)
      • Jesus SET FORTH Mary as an example for all disciples to follow
      • Jesus SEEKS for His followers to do what they can
        1. In our homes (Eph. 5:22-6:4; Col. 3:18-21; Josh. 24:15)
        2. In our daily influence (Phil. 2:14-16; 1 Pet. 2:11-12)
        3. In our congregation (1 Cor. 12:12-27; 10:31; Eph. 3:21; 4:11-16)
        4. In the lives of the hurting and needy (Gal. 6:10; Jas. 1:27; Matt. 25:34-40)
  5. Give Jesus What You Have – Come to Him While You Can
        • Believe Jesus is the Son of God – Acts 16:31
        • Repent of your sins and turn toward God – Acts 17:30
        • Confess your faith in Jesus Christ – Romans 10:9
        • Be baptized into Christ – Acts 22:16
          1. God will forgive all of your sins – Acts 2:38
          2. God will add you to His church – Acts 2:47
          3. God will register you in heaven – Hebrews 12:23
