True Worship Throughout the Ages

John 4:20-24

Looking At the Text (John 4:20-24)

    1. Conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman
    2. She was a believer in God; wanted to worship properly
    3. Knew the answer to worship could only come via a prophet
    4. She had the heart of a true worshiper
    5. His answer was for NOW and for the hour to come (v. 23)

The Patriarchs

    1. The first worship Cain and Abel – by faith or not by faith
    2. Noah’s “sweet smelling aroma” (Gen. 8:21)
    3. Abraham—Isaac—Jacob’s worship (Gen. 12:7, 8; 13:4:8; 22:9)—(26:25)—(Gen. 33:20; 35:1,3,7)
    4. Job, another patriarch, and his early morning regular worship (Job 1:5)
    5. Worship was described as a holy man’s spirit calling on God in His prescribed way of worship

Judaism in the Old Testament

    1. They met God at Mt. Sinai; then in “temple” worship
    2. First Jewish worship— “as the Lord commanded”
    3. First Jewish worship’s failure—NOT as the Lord commanded
    4. The OT shadow of animal sacrifices—a shadow of Jesus’ blood
    5. The place of Incense—sweet smelling aroma and NT prayer
    6. Truth and spirit was God’s design in Jewish age
    7. Yet they worshiped God in His way (truth) but their heart was “far from Him” (Isa. 29:23; Matt. 15:8; Mark 7:6)

The Christian Age

    1. We understand the five acts of worship
    2. America has ignored His way; and devised the own way to fit their desire (cf. 1 Cor. 11:20-21)—Lord’s supper or YOUR supper
    3. The danger in His church today is worshiping Him in His truth and not involving OUR spirit
    4. Application of this truth to His five acts of worship
    5. True Worship Involves His Truth and Our Spirit
