From the moment that a person is born, the only eyes through which he can see things are his own. When a person begins to walk, the only steps that he takes and understands are his own. Humans are self-contained, self-sustaining, self-focused creatures. How curious for the prophet Jeremiah to observe, “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps” (Jer. 10:23).
Man thinks that he has it all figured out. He thinks that he can navigate life on his own, as he sees fit, and end up wherever he wants. How desperately—so very desperately—we need God! It takes a wise, humble, truly observant person to realize that!
Let us strive to never forget that “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man” (Psa. 118:8). There is nothing worth leaning upon or trusting when it comes to our “own understanding” or our “own eyes” (Prov. 3:5-7)! Learn to see life through God’s eyes and trust Him when you can’t always see the way.
