Summary
  1. Jesus Prayed for HIMSELF – That He and Father Might Be GLORIFIED (17:1-5)
    1. Glorified in “the hour” planned from eternity (17:1; cf. Heb. 9:28; 1 Pet. 1:18-20; Rev. 13:8)
    2. Glorified in accomplishing His purpose and work (17:2-4; cf. 4:34; 9:4; 19:30)
      1. Eternal life is for those who know God and obey Him (Heb. 5:9; 1 John 2:3-5)
    3. Glorified in being restored to His eternal glory (17:5)
      1. Jesus laid aside heavenly glory to accomplish His earthly mission (Phil. 2:5-11)
      2. The eternal Jesus longed for His eternal glory (Dan. 7:13-14; Heb. 10:12)
  2. Jesus Prayed for HIS APOSTLES – That They Might Be SANCTIFIED (17:6-19)
    1. Sanctified involves one’s relationship to the world and to God
      1. The sanctified are set apart BY God FROM the world TO His holy service
      2. Jesus contrasts “in the world” (17:11-13, 18) but “not of the world” (17:14, 16)
    2. Sanctified is accomplished by God’s Word
      1. Jesus had revealed God to the apostles by giving His words (17:6, 8, 14)
      2. Faithful obedience to His Word/truth sets one apart to God (17:6, 17-19; 8:32)
    3. That they might be sanctified in oneness with each other and with God (17:6-11)
    4. That they might be sanctified in the joy of Jesus in themselves (17:12-13)
    5. That they might be sanctified in the safekeeping from the devil (17:14-16)
      1. Being set apart to God brings hatred from the world (17:14; 15:18-25; Luke 6:22)
      2. God can and does “keep” His own (Matt. 6:13; John 10:28-29; Jude 24)
  3. Jesus Prayed for FUTURE BELIEVERS – That They Might Be UNIFIED (17:20-26)
    1. Unified in Faith and Practice of His Word (17:20-23)
      1. The principle of unity is the authority of God’s Word (17:20-21; 1 Co. 4:6; Rev. 22:18-19)
      2. The pattern of unity is the oneness of the Father and the Son (17:21)
      3. The place of unity is full submission to Divine authority “in God” (17:21)
      4. The purpose of unity is the conversion of the world (17:21-23)
      5. The presence of denominations is contrary to the prayer of Jesus (Eph. 4:4-6)
      6. The prayer and word of Jesus lead to “one body” (Eph. 4:4), with “no divisions” (1 Cor. 1:10)
    2. Unified in Love for Jesus and Each Other (17:23, 25-26)
      1. The love of God is our pattern and is to be seen by everyone around us (John 13:34-35)
    3. Unified with Jesus in Heaven (17:24)
      1. Jesus prayed that all disciples may be with Him in heaven (14:3; 1 Thess. 4:17)
      2. Jesus prayed that all disciples may behold His glory in heaven (1 John 3:2; Col. 3:4)
  4. Jesus Did All of This for You! Are You His?
    1. Believe Jesus is the Son of God – John 8:24
    2. Repent of your sins and turn toward God – Acts 17:30
    3. Confess your faith in Jesus Christ – Romans 10:9
    4. Be baptized into Christ – Mark 16:16
      1. God will forgive all of your sins – Acts 2:38
      2. God will add you to His church – Acts 2:47
      3. God will enroll you in heaven – Hebrews 12:23
    5. Walk faithfully with the Lord – 1 John 1:7
